Garment Accessories: Accessories mean the extra component. To make a complete
garment some materials or component is necessary except fabric. These materials
called trimmings or garments accessories.
For example- Zipper, label, button, thread, lining, interlining
are common accessories or trimmings.
Different types of trimmings or accessories:
There are some trimmings which are not usually seen from
outside (interlining), some trimmings are functional (zipper). So different
types of trimmings are used in a garment which are given with short
description-
1. Label:
Garments Label are the part or components attached to a
garment which carries some information like the size of garments, brand name or
company name, trade mark, type of fiber, care information etc. Label may be of different types like Main Label, Care Label, Size Label etc.

2. Motif:
To increase the beauty of garments the components attach to
the outer part of garments called motif. It’s only use for decorative purposes.
Generally it may have the company name or trade name,
different types of symbol or logo there.
The only difference between label and motif is that, label
is placed inside of garments and motif is present outside of garments.
Motif may be of different sizes and attachment system also
may vary one to another. Most of the motifs are embroidery designed but others
are printed designed. Thermoplastic yarn
may be used to make motif so that they can be attached to the garments by
ultrasonic wielding process.
3. Zipper:
Zipper plays a very important role in garments. For some garments like pant, trousers, jacket,
skirt, zipper is very necessary. To open & close of a particular part of a
garment zipper is used. Besides functional uses it also used as a decorative
purposes.
On a fine tape, metal or plastic made teeth attached
spirally to make a row and similar two rows are bonded by a sliver to make a
complete zipper. Zipper tape is attached to the garments by sewing.
Zipper tape is normally made of cotton, polyester, nylon or
mixed fiber. Teeth of zipper is may be made of aluminum or plastic.
For different garments various zipper are used. For ladies
skirt concealed zipper, for kids, gents and also for ladies continuous zipper
widely used. Continuous zipper also used for suitcase, bag and so on.

Almost all garments for functional and also decorative purposes
button is used. Button is made of bone, pearl, synthetic material like
polyester, nylon, acrylic, metal.
Buttons are may be
different types like two hole button, four hole button or ,may hole less that
is shank button. Buttons normally attached to the garments by button attaching
machine. In this machine a clamp holds the button and a sewing machine sew the
button to the garment. Sewing machine may be single thread or double thread
lock stitch machine.

5. Sewing thread:
The thread which is used to sew of garments in order to make
complete garments called sewing thread. Sewing thread may be of different
types, different sizes, different colour, and different forms. Before sewing of
garments during selection of thread, it needs to know about the thread
properties like strength, elasticity, thread count, thread materials in order
to keep the quality of garments.
6. Lining:
Inside the garments the fabric used which is different
from original fabric called lining. Lining is used to increase the comfort,
keep the shape of garments and for hang. Lining also used as for insulating and
also for decorative purposes.
Lining fabric may be of woven or knitted fabric.
Lining fabric usually made of nylon, polyester, acetate, viscose, cotton, wool
and also with the mixed fiber.
7. Interlining:
To increase the strength of a part of garments or to
hold the shape of that part the fabric is used between two or more fabrics
called interlining. Interlining is used in collar, cuff, foaming jacket, waist
band and also in front part of coat.
Interlining may be of two different types like fusible
interlining and non fusible interlining.
8. Lace, Braid & Elastic:
These are the extra designed fabric, mostly used for
the decorative purposes. These have also the functional uses. These are
attached by sewing them into the garments.
Lace is made of different types of yarns by weaving or
knitting process. Rolled form lace is attached to the garments with the help of
rack guide so easily.
Braid is formed by the diagonally interlacing process
of yarns. Braid may be like thin tape or tube form.
Elastic may be like round, or thin tape. Elastic
basically used in under garments and for kids garments. Rubber or elastane are used
as elastic in the garments. By using different types of stitch & seam,
elastic is attached to the garments.
9. Shoulder pad:
Shoulder pad used to hold the shape of garments .It
also has the decorative property. Shoulder pad usually placed between the
linings. It is attached by fusing and adhesive materials.
10. Wadding:
To make the garments warm wadding is used. It is light
and easily washable and also low cost. Wadding is made from synthetic fibre
like polyester, polypropylene. Wadding is attached to the garments by using
compound sewing machine.
